Report from Chron.com
In February, Rice scientist Marjorie Corcoran died after being struck by a Metro light rail train on her way to campus.
And now a ghost bike memorial has been set up off of Main Street near Sunset where the accident occurred.
Ghost bikes are bicycles that have been painted white and placed where a cyclist has been killed. They are chained near where the accident happened and are decorated with memorabilia and flowers to honor the late cyclist.
"She was very concerned about what was best for the students - both our undergraduate students and our graduate students. She always had an open door - both for her students and her colleagues," said Professor Doug Natelson, chairman of the physics and astronomy department at Rice.
Corcoran, 66, died February 3 after she was struck by a Metro light rail train while riding her bicycle near Hermann Park. She was heading toward the campus about 8:15 a.m. when she crossed over the southbound tracks along the 6300 block of Fannin near Sunset. Corcoran was pronounced dead at the scene. Metro officials said the investigation is continuing but that the train had the right-of-way.
